The Almshouses at Revesby Estate
The Revesby Estate in Lincolnshire, England, is home to a notable set of Almshouses with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. These Almshouses were originally established in 1728 by Joseph Banks, Esq., the Member of Parliament for Revesby and father of the renowned botanist Sir Joseph Banks.
The ten Almshouses comprised of just one reception room and one bedroom accessed by a ladder, there was no interior plumbing, water was accessed from the village water pump, and heating and cooking was by way of a large central fireplace with a cooking range facility to heat water from the fire.
Their primary purpose was to provide housing for ten ‘distressed’ farmers who had suffered losses due to unavoidable circumstances. Widows were also eligible for residence.
In 1862, the Almshouses underwent significant rebuilding under the direction of James Banks Stanhope, a descendant of the Banks family. Constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs which replaced the original thatched roofs, these structures featured a large tablet commemorating their original foundation in 1728. The design maintained the historical aesthetic while improving living conditions for the residents.
By the 1980s, the original Almshouses had become dilapidated and were rebuilt in the same architectural style, preserving their historical appearance. Five Almshouse dwellings were created instead of the original ten and the modernised single-story Almshouses now include amenities such as a bedroom, bathroom, and sitting room with an integrated kitchen annex. Efforts have been made to make them wheelchair accessible, supporting residents in maintaining their independence.
Today, Revesby Estate continues to honour the legacy of its Almshouses by providing affordable housing for older residents in need within the East Lindsey area. The Residents participate in community life, including attending church services on Sundays and public feasts, reflecting the longstanding traditions associated with alms-houses in the UK. The Estate arranges any repairs needed and looks out for the Residents if they have any difficulties and concerns.
The Revesby Almshouses stand as a testament to the enduring commitment to charitable housing in England, blending historical preservation with modern adaptations to continue serving the community as they have for nearly three centuries.
