Take a Moment May 2026
Dear friends,
I hope you are well. How quick the months fly, the weather continues to be bright and sunny, and lifts us out of the dreary days of winter.
Spring is certainly in the air and nature has truly woken up. The first of the swallow arrived in the 2nd week after Easter and like the rest of the birds in our garden are busy nesting. The bird song is wonderful in the mornings and I leave the window open at night so when I wake up I hear them singing.
Talking about singing, I went along with many others on Sunday the 26th April to the welcome of the new Bishop of Grimsby the Rte. Reverend Jean Burgess, the first female Bishop in out diocese. It was a lovely sunny day, the singing in the Cathedral, was as you can imaging, wonderful, there was a live band playing the music, as well as the Cathedral organ and choir. (How times are changing) But having said that, lt wasn’t quite as good as the dawn chorus! But, wonderful just the same.
Maybe we all feel a little more like singing when the sun shines (even if it’s only in the shower!) Did you know apparently, singing began in prehistoric times, started by people imitating natural sounds, the birds and calls of animals? Music evolved through cultural, religious and artistic development across civilizations.
Christian hymns began to be sung nearly 200 years ago as a way to worship. In the bible the apostle Paul says speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Since then it has helped many people through the centuries grow in faith and helps us express ourselves, whether to celebrate, or receive comfort, reminding us the importance of music goes beyond pure entertainment.
Which, brings me to a concert we are holding here in St Lawrence’s. They call themselves the ‘Rock Choir’ they return by popular request. Their music is mainly secular, with one or two favourite hymns, songs from the shows, popular and current artists, and they do sing some rock and roll with a hit or two of Elvis or that era. There is plenty to sing along to and you will be in good company. You certainly will find yourselves rocking to the music.
