A Glimpse into Revesby’s Winter Festivities of the Past.
Revesby has long been a place of community spirit and celebration, and the historical records offer a fascinating insight into the vibrant social life of the village in years gone by. Among the most memorable events were the Revesby Ice Carnival and the generous entertainments provided for local schoolchildren at the Abbey.
The Revesby Ice Carnival
One particularly striking occasion was the grand Ice Carnival held on the Wong, adjacent to the Reservoir at Revesby. Thanks to the kindness of Lady Beryl Gilbert, over 1,000 people from Horncastle, Spilsby, Boston, and surrounding villages gathered to enjoy the festivities. Following a keen frost, a large stretch of ice became safe for skating and the Spilsby Brass Band provided lively music for dancing.
The scene was described as “gay and pretty,” with the surroundings illuminated by flares, lanterns, and fairy lamps. A huge bonfire blazed, and a magnificent display of fireworks added colour and excitement to the evening. Special rockets lit up the sky, illuminating the countryside for miles around- a true spectacle of winter cheer.
Treats for Schoolchildren at the Abbey
Equally memorable were the occasions when the Right Hon. E. and Mrs. Stanhope opened the doors of Revesby Abbey to local schoolchildren. One such day saw around one hundred children welcomed for a sumptuous tea, followed by an afternoon of entertainment. Distinguished guests, including Mr. James Banks Stanhope and many of the local gentry, attended to share in the joy and ensure the happiness of the young visitors.
After tea, the children were treated to a fascinating display of dissolving views, shown using powerful oxy-hydrogen limelight lanterns, state-of-the-art technology at the time. The views included beloved stories such as Cinderella and Tom Thumb, along with comic scenes that provoked much laughter. The event concluded with hearty cheers from the children for their generous hosts.
