Take a Moment – October 2026
Dear friends,
This dry hot summer with our reservoirs being threatened to run dry, a refreshing glass of water felt even more precious. I’m a water drinker, whether cold or hot nothing can replace the soothing, natural taste of a cup of water.
While it’s been hot I seemed to drink and drink, one particular day, I remember, I seemed to be drinking all morning, I can remember thinking, ‘I can’t still be thirsty’.
So I decided to stop, so I ignored my thirst for an hour until I started to get a headache. Finally I pulled my chair away from the desk and went off to the kitchen to get a glass of water only to see the one I had poured earlier untouched on the worktop. I drank it and felt better for it.
Thinking, Isn’t it similar to our relationship with God? With best intentions we open our bible only to get distracted, we stop to put the washing on, or quickly tidy up, empty the dishwasher or make that quick call we should have made the day, we can become spiritually parched….. Never really quenching our thirst, which reading Gods word, (his letter to us,) does.
On Sunday the 25th October it is Bible Sunday, a date which the Church of England marks every year. As Christians we believe all scripture is inspired by God. Scripture teaches us what is true and makes us realise what is amiss in our lives, It corrects us when were wrong, teaches us do what is right and equips us for life, why don’t we drink from Gods word more often.
How about this Bible Sunday we dedicate or rededicate (As we all lapse at times) our lives with our prayer of dedication and try read a few verses of the New Testament every day and see what a difference it makes to our day.
A Prayer of Dedication ( A favourite of mine)
Almighty God,
We thank you for the gift of your word. May it be a lantern to our feet,
A light to our paths, and a strength to our lives.
