January Poetry, by Christopher Sanderson

Driving down the A52
Away from being with you
Sheep among the sugar beet
Sunbeams in my eyes
All along Eaudyke Road
Out into open country
With puddles and dykes
And railings painted white
This is where I saw the egrets
Now I see the swans
The road has been resurfaced
It is straight, it is long
The sun is on the south side
Heading to the west
Lincolnshire flags are flying
I’m on the home stretch now
Passing by the Fen lanes
Also noting covered wagons
Where the pickers
Feel the biting wind
Yet how thankful we will be
For their broccoli and the fresh shoots
Passed on by frozen fingers
To the hot plates and the pizza
