February Poetry, by Christopher Sanderson
So The Conversation Began
And before long we had been
All over the British Isles
We kicked off
In Greenwich and Blackheath
Her home for forty years
Before she moved
To Lincolnshire
Via the Highlands of Scotland
Life had begun in Northumberland
Hexham actually, seventy-one years ago
Of course she asked where I hailed from
And when I said Holmfirth
Last of the Summer Wine Country
She said that her friend
The Shepherd from the North
Loved that programme, because
The land looked better for the sheep
Of course we both agreed
About the beauty of the valleys
But I spoke of the long hard winters
Which led her to talk of her time
In Swaledale, North Yorkshire
I countered
Preferring Poacher cheese
And the flatlands, which lead
Easily to the coastal resorts
I hope we can chat again she said, but
Today I have to dash off for a massage
